Christmas in Spain is a magical time of year. The streets are filled with festive decorations, the smell of roasting chestnuts and the sound of carolers singing traditional carols. It’s a time for family gatherings, feasting, and of course, the exchange of gifts. But what makes Christmas in Spain so special?

One of the most iconic and beloved traditions of Christmas in Spain is the Christmas Eve dinner. This dinner is shared by families and close friends, and is usually a festive feast that includes a variety of Spanish dishes, such as paella and other seafood delicacies. After dinner, it’s customary for the family to exchange gifts and sing songs.

In the days leading up to Christmas, the Spanish are busy decorating their homes and streets with holiday decorations. Streets are lined with Christmas lights, pine trees are adorned with tinsel and ornaments, and nativity scenes are set up in the plazas. Additionally, the Spanish love to decorate their homes with a variety of festive decorations, such as wreaths and poinsettias.

The day of Christmas is also celebrated in Spain with much fanfare. In the morning, families attend Mass and then enjoy a large family meal, usually featuring a traditional Spanish dish.

One of the most beloved traditions of Christmas in Spain is the Three Kings Parade, which takes place on the evening of January 5th. During this parade, a group of people dressed as the Three Kings (Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar) travel through the streets, followed by a procession of camels, musicians, dancers, and floats. Once the procession arrives at a plaza, the Three Kings throw candy to the crowd.

In the days leading up to Epiphany, the Spanish also take part in the tradition of the Christmas Lottery, also known as El Gordo. This lottery is incredibly popular in Spain, and tickets are sold throughout the country. On December 22, the winning numbers are announced, and the lucky ticket holders receive their prize in the form of a lump sum of money.
